The Icelandic horse is unique in the world in terms of its five gaits, and in possessing a character and temperament under the saddle which make it an ideal companion.
In addition to the classic gaits of the walk, trot and gallop, the reed is notable for two other gaits : the tolt and the amble.
The tolt
This gait has four beats in which the horse always has at least one hoof on the ground. This gait is particularly comfortable in ensuring that the rider is not subjected to moments of suspension and can therefore ride for long distances without getting tired.

The amble
This gait of two beats is characterised by a strong, rolling, lateral movement in which two legs on the same side are lifted or lowered at the same time.
The amble is a racing gait, enabling a well trained horse to reach up to 50 km per hour.
